What is Orthopedics?

Orthopedics is a specialty of medicine that focuses on treating deformities and impairments of the muscular and skeletal systems, especially injured ligaments in the extremities and the spine. The musculoskeletal system includes joints, bones, tendons, nerves and muscles that allow a person to move and be active.

As a specialty, orthopedics was mainly devoted to spine and limb deformities in children. Today, orthopedists treat patients of all ages for clubfeet, athletic injuries and arthritis as well as the common broken bone.

An orthopedist manages special problems of the musculoskeletal system. During a consultation, your disorder or injury may be examined and diagnosed through x-rays, blood tests and other tests. A treatment plan may be prescribed that may include a combination of therapies. You may also need rehabilitation such as physical therapy to restore the strength of your muscles and their function and movement. We also provide preventative measures to slow the progress of a disease or to prevent injuries from happening in the future.

Some orthopedists specialize even further. They may focus on certain areas of the body such as the feet and ankles, knees or hips. Other special fields are pediatrics, sports medicine and trauma, or a combination of several areas such as knee injuries during sports.

Some symptoms that mean you may need to visit an orthopedist are:

• Difficulty with daily functions such as walking upstairs or carrying grocery bags
• Pain in your joints that grows worse while you are resting
• Heat, inflammation and redness in a joint
• Limited range of motion
• Swelling around a joint or injured area
• Joint, tendon or muscle pain that lasts for more than a week

After your problem is diagnosed, our specialist may discuss several treatment options and help you choose the best treatment for your lifestyle, so you can lead an active life again.

You may have body pain and not realize that an orthopedist can help. If you are experiencing pain in your hips, ankles, knees, back or shoulders, you may benefit from a consultation with our specialist.

Our renowned orthopedic surgeon at Phoenix Regenerative Medicine considers surgery as a last resort after trying less invasive regenerative treatments. The earlier you are diagnosed, the easier the treatment will be. Book an appointment at our office in Tempe, AZ for an evaluation so that you can get started with orthopedics.
